Tips for Yarn substitutions

Whenever possible, I try to buy yarn locally: it’s better for the environment, and it supports my neighbourhood craft and yarn shops. Everyone has their own favorite fibers, but the most important thing is that your yarn suits your lifestyle, feels comfortable against your skin, and fits your budget.

I knit my designs using yarn I already have or can easily find nearby. Since not everyone has access to the same brands or fibers, I always try to suggest a suitable substitute that matches the project’s gauge. Your local yarn store staff are usually more than happy to help you find it.

Before you cast on, always knit a swatch. This small test helps you confirm that your gauge matches the pattern and prevents any unwelcome surprises in the finished garment’s size or drape. If your swatch comes out too tight or too loose, simply switch to a smaller or larger needle until it lines up perfectly.

Choosing the right yarn can transform a project, from how it wears to how it feels - so take your time, swatch thoughtfully, and don’t hesitate to ask for advice. Above all, I hope knitting your own garments brings you as much joy as I find in creating them.

Happy knitting!
